Census Night

Here in Australia a census is held every 5 years.  Tonight is the night to stand up and be counted. A ‘snapshot’ of our country and its citizens will be taken on this Tuesday in August.

Census or musters have been held all over the world since before the time of Jesus’ birth.  Unlike Mary and Joseph we do not have to travel by donkey to a designated town.  We can sit in the comfort of our own home and even submit the information online.

I am grateful that I live in a country where I have the opportunity to complete this survey.

So, why is there so much angst about filling in the details?  I have heard people ask why they should do it when the information is readily available to governments.  People question their safety and security.  I don’t know whether my short-term memory is failing but I do not recall the same level of angst at previous census .  Are we feeling particularly vulnerable at the moment?

Here is your chance to have your say.

  1. I can’t understand it either. I have always thought it important that the government have these demographics to assist with planning for the future. And let’s face it, they can find out from council what kind of house I live in, from the ATO whether I work and how much I own, from births, deaths and marriages whether I am indeed married to my husband, and from the passport office whether I am a citizen or not. I just don’t get what all the fuss is about????

  2. So true, Pat. I am beginning to think that I must associate with a particularly paranoid bunch of people – both online and in real life. Maybe it just because they are the ones making the most noise.

  3. I answered all the questions for me, my daughter, my mum and 3 visiting French family (due to age and language barriers). The Rambling Expat answered for himself. Took me ages to fill in for 6 people, but I think it’s important so Govt know where to count things and put money into things.

    It was pretty general anyway.
