Everywhere I have turned in the past week there seem to be messages about simplifying your life. Some of it has been on other blogs as well as robust discussions both online and in real life. I am not sure whether it is the start of the new year, the planets aligning or just coincidence.
As part of the process of acknowledging that simplicity is at least part of my core values I have changed the byline of this blog to “A simple, sustainable life”.
This post from Sho-Me Simplicity is well worth reading. It is quite long but take your time and try to really understand the points she makes. It is not just possessions that clutter our lives. It can be too many commitments as discussed here at Living Simplyfree or people whose very presence drains your energy and vitality.
Perhaps the final word should come from my mother, who would say “stop the world, I want to get off” when everything got too much. I do not know the origin of this comment but I think it sums up how many people are feeling at the moment.
How often have I said the very same – sometimes getting off is the only way we can see clear of ‘simplifying’ our lives. it is something i have been working towards for the last few years and have a little success at but i have a way to go yet. And of course ‘simplifying our life’ has so many different definitions depending on what our aims, goals and current lifestyles.i am happy with where I am going in ‘simplifying’ and I cannot get any better than that!
Well done, Kerrie. Finding and treading your own path is definitely the way to go.
Very interesting post. I enjoyed reading the link as well. As I have aged I have learned it is okay to say ‘No’.
I agree about saying ‘No’. It is liberating not to feel the need to be all things to all people.
Thanks for the mention. I like your mother’s “stop the world I want to get off” comment. I used to feel like that when I was a single mom. It felt as if I were a juggler who would fail at everything if one ball fell.
Her comment always reminded me of the mouse walking on the spinning cage (like a treadmill).
Fairy, that line comes from a 1960’s musical/movie – sums up how most of us feel at times. We all need some simplicity, I think, and I’m working toward that. Enjoy your blogs.
Thanks for the tip about the origin of the saying. I am glad you enjoy reading my blog.
