Living Life

No blog posts for 5 days!  What have I been doing?

I have been doing the routine things that keep our life ticking over day by day and week by week.  This has been interspersed by a couple of interesting diversions.

A couple of weeks ago we managed to go to IKEA on a busy day trip to Brisbane.  Our mission was to buy some new chairs for our outdoor setting.  We bought 8 chairs as the table we have is quite large.  GMan has made a start on assembling them and did 2 the other night.  This is what they look like.

The old ones are the director-style chairs and they are impossible to keep clean as our cat believes that each one of them is his bed and they end up covered in grey cat hair!  I plan to make removable cushions for the new chairs so that we can have padded seats with the benefit of being able to easily remove and store them when not in use.

I have mentioned before that I menu plan our evening meals.  It is difficult to emphasise how much easier this makes shopping for and preparing meals.

Here is my plan for this week.

Saturday – Dahl with brown rice and steamed carrots and broccoli

Sunday – BBQ eye fillet with sweet potato chips, roasted beetroot in caramelised balsamic and crumbled goat’s cheese and green beans with red wine viniagrette and toasted sesame seeds

Monday – Vegetable quiche (adaptation of zucchini quiche) and salad

Tuesday – Tumeric chicken with brown rice and salad

Wednesday – Stuffed mushrooms with side salad

Thursday – Hamburger patties with home-made tomato sauce, fried mushroom and onions and salad

Friday – Baked potatoes topped with refried beans and cheese plus salad

Salad will be lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and capsicum with the addition of cheese on Tuesday and Thursday.

Sunday’s meal was actually lunch as we had guests.  It put a lot of restaurant meals to shame.

I had time this morning to prepare the mushrooms before I went to work so all I needed to do when I arrived home was to microwave them until cooked then top with a little extra grated cheese and finish them off under the griller.

Any plan needs to be flexible and menu plans are no exception.  I try to make choices based on our activities and needs but sometimes those change.  I cook the baked potatoes in the slow cooker for 4 hours so I would need to be at home to turn it on at about 3pm.  This was going to be OK as I planned to work from home on Friday, however, I need to go to Brisbane and may not be home by 3pm so I have decided to make that meal for Sunday and we will have an antipasto platter and salad on Friday as we need to eat fairly quickly before heading out on Friday evening.

When I opened up a new post to write tonight’s post I noticed that I have published 999 posts on my blog since I began almost 5 years ago in March 2011.

There have been lots of ups and downs, times when I wondered whether I would keep going and others when blogging is just second nature.  GMan chuckles at some of the things I photograph because I need it for a blog post.  This afternoon he asked if I had taken photos of the new hen house that we have built – I assume he figures that is a blogworthy story.  It is, but will have to wait for another day because today I am celebrating my 1000th post.

To all of you you read and sometimes comment, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.  It is the knowledge that there are people out there who read whatever I write that inspires me to continue.

Happy New Year

I was searching for a photo that really portrayed my feelings for the end of one year and beginning of the next.  I did not want images of alcohol or fireworks.

I found this which summed it up for me.

New Year 2016

As 2015 is washed away by the incoming tide it is time to write a fresh new date in the sand and move on.

Wishing you a peaceful and fulfilling year.

Christmas Cheer

Unlike some other years I have written very little about Christmas this year.

We decided not to put up the tree this year as we will be away for Christmas.

2015-12-21 01

Yesterday we had a small Christmas celebration with my immediate family as we will not see them on Christmas Day.  We went out for a casual lunch, then went to the local playground so that our 2 granddaughters could use up some excess energy.  Finally, we adjourned to my brother’s place were we shared some sweet nibbles and drinks while we opened our gifts.  It was a low-key but perfect day.

The only thing that I had not done was send cards/letter/emails.  This afternoon I sat done and wrote a generic letter, added a couple of relevant photographs and sent it off to various corners of Australia and overseas with a couple of clicks.  I still have a small number of cards to post and I will do that tomorrow and hopefully they will still arrive in time for Christmas.

I am not sure how many blog posts will happen over the next week so I will take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and peaceful New Year.

Something Has Changed

Have you noticed something different in the last couple of blog posts?

Every so often WordPress seems to upgrade parts of the site.  It is usually in the actual platform of how bloggers can view stats or in the way editing is done.  I have never seen it affect the actual layout of a blog before.  However, there have been changes to how images are uploaded but most importantly, it seems that the images appear much larger on the blog than before.

What do you think?  Good idea or not?  Regardless of what you or I might think, it would appear that the changes are here to stay.

Remember Me?

According to Facebook it is 10 days since I last wrote a post.  I have been busy and had limited access to a computer but that does not mean I have forgotten you.

GMan and I (and several other family members) travelled interstate to attend the funeral service for my mother-in-law.  This was delayed by several weeks due to a number of logistical issues including some of the family being overseas at the time of her death.  It was an emotional few days and since then I have been trying to keep my head above water at work.

It is the weekend and we are both looking forward to some time at home to catch our breath and re-group.

010I have several ideas for posts but I am too tired to write.  I will be back tomorrow with something a bit more substantial.

Real Life

I apologise for the absence this week and lack of response to your comments.

Just like real-life this blog is filled with celebrations, sadness, routines and the unexpected.

2015-10-03 01My mother-in-law passed away at the beginning of the week and my mind has not been anywhere near my blog.  Due to family circumstances we will have a memorial service next month so we have not had a funeral to attend but there have been many other details to arrange.  This will continue to be the case over the next few weeks but hopefully not to the extent of the past few days.

I am looking forward to reading your previous comments and responding and hope that you will bear with me during this time.

A Curve Ball

Well, hello!  I expect you have been wondering about my disappearance.

2015-06-21 01The past 8 days since I last posted have been more than just busy.  My mind has been totally consumed by other issues and I have not even considered blogging.

My mother underwent open heart surgery 6 days ago and is now recovering.  She is progressing well and I will be back with more everyday tales soon.

It is a cool, crisp day here on the winter solstice.  How about at your place?  Are you in the northern hemisphere and enjoying warm days and the long evening twilight?

I look forward to hearing from you.

A Blog about Smog

I don’t think that I can spend a month in China and not say something about the smog.  From the first day we arrived in Yangshou I have felt disoriented, as if my senses have shut down and I am unable to “tell” what the weather will do. The sky is unlike anything I have seen before and the air feels different. While there have been some gloriously clear days, in general, a grey haze hangs in the air and it feels oppressive.  Steven and I have both been coughing since we arrived and I am convinced that it is smog irritation.  Steven is a well managed asthmatic and I have feared that the smog would set off an attack but thankfully this has not happened.  Before we left for China, friends who visit here often for work warned us about the smog and they check the air quality before they travel.

I am writing this in Xining, at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau on the 23 floor of the hotel.  I look across at the other skyscrapers and the dirty haze just hangs in the sky.  It horrifies me that I am breathing that air. Do children who grow up with this think it’s ordinary weather? How long would you have to be here before you started to accept this as normal, that a really smoggy day was just a bad day?

Today in Xining the Air Quality Index is 134 which means it falls in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. Apparently the general public, like me, wont be affected, but Steve with his asthma may be affected.  To give you a comparison, Brisbane, where we live, was 45 on the same day, in the “Good” category.

In Beijing I read an article in a magazine for expatriates living there.  A man discussed his dilemma about staying and working in a country he loved now that he had a young child. He had been ok about putting himself in the unhealthy environment but felt completely different when he made that unhealthy choice for his child. Lucky him, he had the choice of whether to leave or not, the Chinese don’t.

P1090187 (2)The cause of the pollution is complex, but I understand that it comes predominantly from traffic and coal fired power plants, and that China’s rapid growth fuels the pollution. The development here is mind boggling. Everywhere we go there are skyscrapers being built, not just one 30 storey building at a time but groups of 9 or 10 skyscrapers being erected at the same time and there might be five or six groups in a row creating a forest of skyscrapers. There’s a lot of production and transportation that goes into that enormous level of development.

Consider this for a moment, China produces 70% of all solar panels in the world. In Australia we pat ourselves on the back for using solar panels and happily buy them from China, and yet the production of these panels takes a large amount of water, a precious resource in China, and creates a lot of toxic waste.

China is taking action to address the pollution problem but it is difficult to get a balanced report on this.  There is a lot of propaganda from China and the West about China’s pollution and its actions to address it, but in 2013 the Economist reported “the remarkable thing is not what China has failed to do but what it has achieved, especially in reining in carbon dioxide. Its carbon emissions are growing at half the rate of GDP, a bit better than the global average. China has also boosted investment in renewable energy far more than any other country. It has the world’s most ambitious plans for building new nuclear power stations.”

I certainly don’t know the answer but I do know that this environment is not ok for people to live in. On those rare occasions when I get the opportunity to talk to Chinese people in English, and tell them we are going to Lhasa, the first thing they say is that the air there is clear and you can see the blue sky. That is profoundly sad.
