Carpet Cleaning

We have carpet in the three bedrooms and I generally keep it clean by vacuuming regularly and a sprinkle of bicarb soda on any grubby marks.  However, I get it cleaned every 2 – 3 years and today was the day.

We removed everything from the 3 rooms apart from the cast-iron bed frame in the main bedroom. The other rooms are completely bare.

Empty bedroom
Moving everything out of 3 rooms makes you realise how much stuff you have.  Here is some of it stacked in the study.

Bedroom contents
The two chests of drawers fitted in the hallway just past the bedroom.

Furniture in hallway
The mattress and base were in the bathroom and more stuff in the living room as well.  Smaller items found temporary homes in the wardrobes.

It was a sunny day and I took the opportunity to wash and air all of the bedding.

The  carpet is still a bit damp underfoot so we have re-assembled and made our bed and plugged in the alarm clock but other than that the rest of the furniture and effects will not be returned to their rightful homes until tomorrow evening.

I have cleaned all of the louvres in the living room (79 of them) and The Duke washed down the outside of the house and cleaned all of the outdoor furniture.

Blog posts may be a bit hit and miss for the next couple of weeks as we are really busy.  In between full-time work, preparations for our overseas trip in 11 days ( who’s counting?), a milestone birthday celebration for The Duke, guests arriving on Thursday and preparing the house for the housesitters who will be here while we are away there is not a lot of time for blogging.

What’s happening at your place?

Make Your Own

I have been busy with some other activities but I have hopefully got things re-balanced since my holiday and blogging will slot back into place.

I have posted the recipe for this cream cleanser before but I thought it was worth revisiting.  I will also add a page at the top of the blog with links to recipes for cleaning products so that the information does not get lost in the mists of time.

Firstly, I assembled the ingredients all 3 of them!

2013-04-08 01Cream Cleanser

1&1/2 cups bicarb soda
110ml dishwashing liquid
30ml eucalyptus oil

Mix all ingredients together to form a ‘Gumption-style’ paste.

Store in container.  I use glass because the original instructions cast some doubt over the compatibility with some plastics.

Use to clean sinks, baths and basins by rubbing a paste over the surface and rinse clean with fresh water.  You can spray with vinegar for added effect.  As always, test surface to ensure it is OK to use.

Combine all the ingredients to form a smooth but stiff paste.

2013-04-08 04The quantities in the recipe are perfect for the jar I choose to use.  You can adjust to suit your own needs.

Bi-carbonate of soda is an amazingly versatile cleaning product and whole books have been written about its uses.  Here is one that I also used on the weekend.

We had some grubby marks on the light-coloured carpet near the doorway of our bedroom.  I placed about a teaspoon of bicarb on the carpet and gently rubbed it into the stain.  I vacuumed it immediately and the stain was gone!  It was like magic.  It would naturally depend on the type of marks but this is definitely worth trying before resorting to carpet cleaning.  As always, check for colour fastness on an inconspicuous spot before use.

What bicarb tips do you have to share?

Clean & Clear

Last week we had the carpets cleaned and since we only have carpet in the bedrooms we were able to move almost everything out of the rooms into spaces with hard floors.

This is our bedroom.  The only thing left in it was the bed.

2011-12-13 01This was a really good time to apply the principles that are discussed in the book, ‘The Joy of Less’.  Removing everything from its normal location and only putting back what you really want to keep is the method which Francine recommends.  I had not tried it but can certainly agree, now.  Seeing the room both clear and clean made me determined to keep it that way by only putting back what was important.  I have made some more progress with the decluttering thanks to having to move stuff out for the carpets to be cleaned.
