Getting Ready

There has been more doing than writing going on here in the past few days as the countdown is well and truly on. We are off on Sunday on our first overseas trip in nearly five years. It is a relatively short jaunt of two weeks to Honolulu and a couple of spots in California.

My posts while I am away will be on my travel blog, Somewhere, Anywhere so consider following my adventures there.

We have plenty to do in the next couple of days. The packing is well underway but a little tricky as it will be warm in Honolulu but San Francisco, in northern California, is still quite cool and showery. In fact, I am probably taking as much for 2 weeks as I would for 2 months. I have made a couple of tweaks since I took these photos. I am also taking a jacket, vest and scarves which are not shown.

Finally, I added this skirt after making it yesterday. It is navy and white which fits in nicely with several other pieces in my wardrobe. The fabric is a drapey 4-way stretch and not something I necessarily would have chosen myself. I was asked to make a skirt and the lady provided the fabric which had a border print along both edges and since the fabric was very wide I had an unused strip which she was happy for me to use so I decided on this skirt for myself. It is probably a bit shorter than I would normally wear but I have thrown caution to the wind and decided it would be a perfect addition for casual beachside wear.

I will add one more post here on Saturday and I will show you the other sewing project I have been working on today.

How to Make a ‘Safe Scarf’

This is a follow-up to my post from yesterday.

Here is an overview of how I created the scarf. This is not a sewing blog and therefore it is not a step by step tutorial as such. Additionally, it assumes general sewing competence.

The dimensions are somewhat variable but you will need a piece of fabric that is approximately 150-170cm long and 25-30cm wide and an 18-20cm dress zip.

Insert the zip close to one end of the fabric.

Stitch the remainder of the long edges in a 1.5cm seam with right sides together.

Turn the tube to the right side. Press the seam flat so the the seam and zip are lying in the middle of the tube. Use the seam allowance to create a lap to conceal the zip.

Press under 1cm on the end away from the zip.

Insert the end near the zip inside (1.5-2cm), pin and carefully topstitch to secure the ends. Check that the stitching has caught on both sides.

Stitch across the scarf at the lower end of the zip to create the secure pouch. Trim loose threads.

Last Boxes

We unpacked almost all of the removalist boxes within the first week or two that we were here. However, there were nine boxes of books which remained. They were stacked in the lounge room as we were not 100% sure of where we actually wanted them and there is nothing worse than packing and unpacking books.

After living here for a few months and with the impending arrival of the new lounge furniture, we decided to unpack the books into the shelving units in the office. Office is probably slightly too grand a description as it is essentially a walkway through from the hall to the laundry.

The books take up all of the glassed-in upper shelves and about half of the lower ones. The remainder is storage for some stationery items and other miscellaneous bits and pieces.

On The Road

Well, I have finally made it back and such a lot has changed since my last post 9 days ago.

We said our goodbyes to family and friends and on the morning of Anzac Day (25th April) we left Brisbane with 2 fully laden vehicles and our small dog.

Since we are both driving a vehicle and we have no relief driver we planned the trip so that we are only driving about 350km each day. Goondiwindi was our first overnight stop. After four days of travel and overnight stops, we have made it to Jerilderie in southern New South Wales were we are staying for 2 nights. I finally have time and internet access to write this update.

The travel has been relatively easy and pleasant as the weather has been a comfortable 23 – 28C during the day. This is in stark contrast to the last 2 times we have driven this route. In December 2022 much of the area was reeling from the worst flooding in history with roads that were more potholes than road. There is still evidence of road damage in places but credit must go to the authorities for the monumental repair tasks that have been undertaken. Conversely, in December 2019 we drove this way in the grip of drought with not a drop of water seen in any of the smaller creeks and paddocks everywhere were completely destocked. The worst bushfires ever were about to destroy much of south-eastern Australia. Climate change?

It is a perfect time to catch some of the autumn foliage along the way. This was at Coonabarabran.

Tomorrow we will continue southwards and cross the mighty Murray River which is the border between New South Wales and our new home state of Victoria. It will be another 10 days before the settlement of our new home so we will be staying in an Air BnB accommodation in the meantime.

We will not be idle during that time as we have several appointments and activities planned but more about that in coming days.

A New View

I have finally resurfaced after a crazy few days which culminated on Friday in the removalists loading all of our possessions in the container ready to be transported by rail freight to Victoria. They will be held in storage until the purchase of our new home is finalised in the second week of May.

In the meantime we are spending the next 4 weeks housesitting.

We are only 2 blocks from the main street yet this is the view from the back deck.

There is also a view of the western horizon which is quite a novelty for us as we have spent the past 17 years in a house tucked against the base of an escarpment on our south-western boundary so there have been no sunset views.

If the weather behaves nicely I may have some sunsets to share in the next couple of weeks.

My Life in Boxes

I think the title says it all.

I started packing boxes about 6 weeks ago – a little bit at a time but the effort has really ramped up in the last week as the removalist deadline approaches – Friday is the big day.

Today we loaded the final few things onto the ute and took it to a friend’s place to store it until we are ready to leave Queensland in about 6 weeks.

Meanwhile, back to the boxes. We had packed boxes stacked up in no fewer than 4 different rooms so this afternoon GMan decided that it would be a good idea to put them all together downstairs in the garage.

In other news, I received a notification from WordPress overnight to let me know that this is the 12th anniversary of Organised Castle. I must admit that I never imagined I would still be writing this 12 years later. My sincere thanks to all of my readers over the years. I have made some really special friends through the blog, too.
