A Lucky Find

While some of my op shop bargains have been deliberate purchases, many are simply incidental finds.

My win from today was not even in an op shop. We were walking the dog and as we approached the main street there was a small rack of secondhand clothes outside a craft shop.

I spotted this coat and immediately thought of our elder granddaughter who is coming to visit for a week in July. Since she lives in Queensland her selection of clothes for a Victorian winter is somewhat limited. The coat is a small size which will be perfect for her and it was $5.

This is the view from the back.

The colour in the first photo is the most accurate. I love the shaping and pleated detail which gives it a bit more style than a puffer jacket or the like.

I barely hesitated before buying it as I figured that worst case scenario was that I would simply donate it if it was not deemed suitable, however, she seemed genuinely pleased when I rang to let her know what I had bought. I have even offered to store it in the wardrobe between her visits as she would not need it where she lives.

Matching Accessories

You probably remember my recent post from a couple of weeks ago where I showed you the shoes I bought to wear to a family wedding later this month.

Well, I decided I also needed a handbag and thought a matching bag would be good, however, my younger daughter pointed out that it may be difficult to match the colour so I was prepared to compromise with a metallic finish of some colour.

Anyway, earlier this week we were in a suburban shopping precinct in Melbourne as we were stocking up on a number of pantry items. Once that was done, I wandered into a couple of op shops in the area. The first two didn’t yield anything much at all in the way of bags. The third one was a different story. I had rather optimistically taken the shoes with me so that I could check the colour if I happened to find something suitable.

This was the result. A bag in perfect condition with no marks or signs of wear which matches my shoes perfectly. It was $7. I am beyond thrilled.

A Box of Bananas

Yesterday we did some shopping at the supermarket and greengrocer.

As always, I scanned the shops for any particular bargains.

There were bananas for $1/kg so I prepared to fill a large bag. The owner asked if I wanted a whole box.

Yes, please!

We have sliced banana on our cereal each morning and it does not matter whether it is fresh or frozen.

So, I peeled some and froze them on trays. Once they are frozen I will bag them up for future use. Banana cake, smoothies and banana ice-cream are other possible uses.

There are still plenty in the box so I will freeze them over coming days.

This is another example of being open and aware to bargains that may come your way.

The box full was $13 which worked out at slightly less than 9c/banana.

Bargain Buy & Brains Trust

On Tuesday I went to the dentist which is adjacent to my latest favourite op shop. I popped in and found a pair of fitted white stretch pull-on trousers for the princely sum of $4.

Of course, they were too long and needed taking up. The next question was what is the correct or most flattering length.

I was unsure and turned to the collective brains trust of some of my online fashionista friends. After a couple of attempts I settled on this length.

Here are the trousers hemmed, pressed and ready to wear.
