World Environment Day

Well, yesterday was World Environment Day.  So, what did you do?  Anything special to mark the occasion?  Make a commitment to change something to make your life a little more sustainable?  Even just stop and pause to reflect on your journey to lower your carbon footprint?

The theme for this year is Think. Eat. Save and the focus is around the enormous (20%) wastage of all food in 1st World countries.  I am planning to encourage people in my workplace to take up the challenge and try not to waste so much food.  There will be more details on that another day.

Challenges – An Update

We are now more than halfway through the month of October so I thought it was time I posted an update of my progress with my twin challenges of ‘Frocktober’ and ‘Stoptober’.

Frocktober is going well.  I have worn a dress or skirt and top every time I have left the house, apart from a couple of weeks ago when it was quite cool and I wore jeans for our casual Friday.  I have managed the additional challenge of not wearing an identical outfit twice in the month so far.  Hopefully, I can get to through the next 13 days as well.

Stoptober has been less of a stellar success, possibly because I started it on a whim and did not have any great plans.  Mind you, I think it is a bit of a fruitless exercise if you buy up big the month before in order not to spend during a particular time.  We have continued to buy modest amounts of groceries as well as fruit and vegetables.  I have thought carefully about what I needed and bought only the basics.  Our ‘essential’ spending has included a doctor’s appointment for me as well as a trip to the dentist for The Duke.  He has a follow-up appointment for more treatment next week.  On the weekend we bought some wire to fence the vegetable garden, seedlings and more grain for the chickens.  I see these purchases as an investment because the returns will always outweigh the outlay.

Our one real ‘failure’ was a decision to eat out last Friday.  We went to the local pizza restaurant and I tried the gluten-free bases which were very acceptable.  We have taken our packed lunches to work each day and I managed to dodge a couple of lunches at work which has meant that I have saved the money but also have not had to confront the issue of what to eat while maintaining my grain-free, sugar-free eating plan as much as possible.

The mortgage will look a bit healthier with the additional money saved!

Weekly Challenge – Week 17

It is now less than 7 weeks until we head off to New Zealand on our holiday.  This challenge has certainly helped me get some things done but there is a lot more I want to achieve before we go.

The items in bold are ones that are still not done from previous weeks.  I do need to try to clear some more things off the list.

3. Create a spreadsheet for future holiday packing needs

17. Follow up what I need to do to change my superannuation

23. Organise quote to have poinciana tree lopped and mulched

We have almost decided that we can do it ourselves.

32. Thin out and re-pot bok choy seedlings

I have planted 12 of the strongest ones in the garden and will stagger planting of the rest.

35. Make a vinyl cover for the newly-created day bed

39.Arrange to close a bank account that is no longer required

47. Take glass jars to op shop

I will give them to a specific person who would like them but can’t be done till next month.

51. Add more notes to my Christmas letter draft

54.Search for accommodation for weekend in Sydney next month.

56. Clean and pack away the doll’s house I received through Freecycle (for when the girls are older).

59. Finish sorting out my stash of fabric.

65. Put away the fabric and sewing goodies that have been given to me recently (Thanks Judith and Carol)

66. Wrap Christmas gifts for Miss O and Izz

67. Start making some home-made goodies for Christmas gifts

68. Tidy up the top of the filing cabinet

Til next week. 🙂

Weekly Challenge – Week 16

Week 1 – I have decided to remove all the tasks that have been completed.  The list now will just be the ones I haven’t done from previous weeks 😦 and the 4 new ones that I have added for the coming week.  They will retain their existing numbering so you will be able to gauge how long I have been procrastinating over some of them.  I have put notes in italics by way of explanation below some items.

What I have done so far.  Scroll to the end of the list to so the new additions for this week.

59. Finish sorting out my stash of fabric.

61.Check booking for Mousetrap

62. Pack for trip to Melbourne

63.Plan menu for next week when we get back

64.Finish presentation for work conference

There is nothing too onerous being added to the list this week as I will be away from Wednesday morning until Monday afternoon.  Last week I finally finished the windows at the back of the house so it was great to cross that off the list.  I finished organising my costume but decided against a beret.  I will post photos after the event.

The other thing I did was refashion a pair of jeans I bought from the op shop a couple of weeks ago.  The waist was an excellent fit but they were a little long in the crotch and also much too baggy in the legs so I did some major alterations and am very pleased with the result.  I only have a couple of average photos that I took of the image in the mirror but hopefully you will get the idea.

Front view…….

And the rear…………

Til next week. 🙂

60. Refashion and hem 2 pairs of jeans/trousers that I bought at the op-shop.

Re 57.  The theme for our table is Woodstock – any tips or suggestions will be gratefully accepted.  I am trying to make it as cost neutral as possible.  It will be interesting given that the original Woodstock festival was in the summer – hence some participants wore VERY little in the way of clothing.  We will be re-creating the event near Ballarat at the end of August -BBBRRRR!!!!  I am thinking of a long skirt – might buy a floral sheet from the op shop, tie-dyed t-shirt and a long over-sized cardigan.  For warmth I will add tights underneath the skirt and perhaps a crocheted beret.  Off I go to search the internet for a pattern and try to refresh my crocheting skills.

Til next week. 🙂
