What a Weekend!

Our weekends are usually full of activity at home because we are at work all week.  This one was no exception and I have to admit that it is great to get to Sunday evening and feel a real sense of achievement.

Of course there are all of the basics to be done so I had 2 loads of washing done and hung out on Friday evening.  The weather has been fine and dry for the past few days so the washing almost dried overnight.  This meant that I could do the ironing on Saturday morning.

Our first job was to split and stack some more firewood.

Woodpile

We will probably not use the fire much more this winter so there is now plenty of wood split and ready for next year.

Pile reduced

There was a huge pile of logs that needed splitting and they are almost all gone now.  Just lots of smaller pieces to be sorted and stacked into boxes.  It was great to get this done as we will be keeping the woodshed but dismantling the adjacent chicken house before long.  That is because we a building a new run for the chickens.

The new chicken run has been a considerable time in the planning and preparation but now you can actually see some progress.  We have dug the holes and set the 4 corner posts in concrete.  There are another 4 intermediate ones done, too.

Posts for the chicken run

There are still 6 more holes and posts to do so we are hoping that the fine weather continues so that we can do them next weekend.

The garden is looking really good at the moment as you can see.

Lemon tree

The lemon tree is groaning with the crop.

Vegie garden

Vegetables are growing well.  We need to have bok choy with a few meals this week before it completely overwhelms everything else.

AzaleaThe azalea is looking particularly pretty.

In between the outdoor work, I managed to do the shopping at the local Co-op, fruit and vegetable stall and Aldi as well as host some guests through AirBnB last night.

Here is a final shot looking down from the verandah of the area which will be the chicken run.  There will need to be some re-arranging of some of the plants that fall within the area, although I think the mango tree will probably stay.  This was taken late in the afternoon but you can see the peach tree on the left of the photo which is already starting to blossom.  In another couple of weeks it will be in full flower.

All in all, it has been a fun and productive weekend.  How was yours?

Slow Living – July

Yes, it is the end of the month again and time for a round up of the slow-living activities.

However, I am sorry that I have to let you know that I will no longer be continuing with this series of posts.

I have tried really hard for 6 months to get into the swing of writing these posts but it simply does not work for me.  A couple of days before the end of the month I actually start worrying about what I am going to write and whether I can manage to complete the task.  I have decided that this is not useful for me and I would rather continue to be a free spirit and write as and when the mood takes me.  Just like real life, some days I have lots of topics and other days I scratch around for something useful to say.

It is not farewell from striving to live slowly and simply but rather it is simply that I will no longer be participating in this project.

Please drop in to Christine’s blog and check out the fabulous blogs that are written by people who are more disciplined than me.

Time To Think

Sometimes I have a precise menu plan for the week and other times I make it up as I go along.  Today I had not even taken anything out of the freezer so spent a little time while I was on the train this evening planning what to eat for dinner.  I decided on grilled sausages with vegetable patties and fried mushrooms.  Of course we have home-made tomato sauce with the sausages.  This was all prompted by knowing that there was some leftover sweet potato mash and some leftover cooked rice in the refrigerator.

Leftovers

I picked some bok choy from the garden.

Bok choy

I chopped and lightly stir-fried the bok choy before adding it to the mash/rice mixture.

Stir-frying

I added some herb salt, black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of cumin to the mixture along with a small egg and some chickpea flour.  The mixture was very soft so it was a matter of placing dollops of it into the pan and frying both sides.  Finally, I fried some mushrooms and dinner was ready.

Dinner

A filling dinner and the verdict from The Duke was, “Yum”.  You can’t ask for much more than that.

How do you deal with leftovers?

Not My Day Job

Almost 3 months ago one of my posts included a piece about building a small concrete block wall.  Here is the beginning that I posted way back then.

Block wall

Like many of our projects, it has been rather a long-winded process as we try to fit things into the limited time on the weekends.  The weather is another factor which curtails outdoor activity.

Today, it was finally time to put the timber lattice screen into position and secure it.

Wall and lattice - finished

We have also been working on painting the posts which will be used for the new chicken run.  Most of them are finished but a few still need a second coat of paint.

Completed posts

Here are the remainder on the scaffolding which we use to support them while we are painting.

Posts on scaffold

If the weather is kind we may get started on putting the first of the posts in the ground next weekend.

Plastic Free? – Not Yet

As we approach the end of the month I feel as though I am limping towards the finish line with respect to Plastic Free July.

Picture

On Wednesday we bought a new telephone for home.  It has an inbuilt answering machine and a second handset.  It was packaged in a cardboard box which is great but every single item was separately wrapped in plastic!

Plastic packaging

I generally keep any plastic bags that do happen to make their way into our home.  Even ones with air holes are used for containing rubbish.  These are too small to be of any use so I think I will have to pack them all inside one bag and then put them in the rubbish.  This is far from an ideal solution but the main thing will be to ‘dispose of thoughtfully’ so that they do not end up in the marine environment where plastic does untold damage.  Here is an example that I saw posted on Facebook the other day.  It comes from this page.

Photo: As a little baby this poor snapper turtle swam through a plastic ring and got stuck. Conscious Consumers - think about the plastic you buy and how you dispose of it.

Today I bought a book for our guests to write comments on their stay.  I looked at several different ones but in the end I decided that rather than a generic one with a black vinyl (plastic) cover from the newsagent that I would buy a handcrafted one from an independent bookstore in our town.  It is made in Sri Lanka using handmade paper from elephant dung and post-consumer waste paper.  The only problem was that it was packaged in shrink-wrap plastic.  This will go in the bin along with the telephone packaging.  Here is the book (plastic removed) and the addition of a title (printed by me).

Guest book

I have also bought more yoghurt, cheese and milk – all in plastic.

So what have I learned from participating in Plastic Free July?  Awareness, mostly.  It is pretty difficult to live an existence that is completely free of single-use plastics.  I think in the scheme of things that I do quite well, but there is room for improvement.  The dairy products are the only things that I buy regularly in plastic.  Reducing consumption in all aspects of your life and not buying new will certainly limit the plastics more than anything else you do.

I bought the regular things that I do this month so this is a true indication of the single-use plastics that I contribute to the waste stream.

We used AirBnB for accommodation in both the USA last year and here in Australia earlier this year.  Our experiences were very positive so I decided that we could perhaps try hosting guests via this site.

Our guest room is generally available on most weekends (Fridays and Saturdays plus Sundays if required).  This week I decided to extend the availability to Thursday evening as well and sure enough, we had an enquiry yesterday afternoon.   It looks as though we will be hosting our first international guests tonight.

It seems a little odd because we planned our overseas trip (including the accommodation) several months in advance.  We did not want to leave anything to chance since we on a fairly tight schedule.  Obviously, not everyone plans in advance.  I must say that I actually look forward to being able to travel more freely and make decisions on the spur of the minute.  However, I do not expect that our travel will be like that while we are still working full-time and have a limited time due to our leave entitlements.

Do you plan your travel and accommodation in advance or are you a free-wheeling spirit?  What about hosting guests in your home in other habitable space that your own?

Clean Clothes

Housework is a never-ending circle.  Whether you view it as a closed-loop system which supports and sustains your family or as a treadmill that you cannot escape is entirely up to you.  I prefer the first view because it is positive and values homemaking as an important role.

I was interested to read recently that ‘doing the washing’ is not about tossing a heap of clothes into the washing machine, followed by the dryer or perhaps hanging them on the line.  In this scenario the final step is then seen as throwing the heap of clean clothes on the nearest sofa or bed.  This results in disorganisation and clutter while various members of the household grab whatever they need to wear.

Unsurprisingly, the above view emanated from a discussion about how clutter and disorganisation go hand-in-hand.  It is easy to imagine that over time the pile of clean clothes becomes dusty and soiled and then need rewashing.  Perhaps items cannot be located which results in buying more clothes.  Items which need mending are left and forgotten.  Then there is a downward spiral, the pile becomes a permanent fixture, the bed is no longer able to be used for its original purpose and so on.  This is an extreme picture but one that it is best to avoid.

Clean clothes

Confession time:  I resorted to this practice last week and here is some of the evidence.

It took me 5 minutes yesterday to set things to right which made me wonder why I hadn’t done it sooner.

Folded clothes

The discussion went on to say that you should not regard the washing as ‘done’ until the clothes are dry, sorted, folded and put away as well as any ironing any items which require it.

I generally manage to do all of this in one go except the ironing.  Ironing is always done at least once a week.  This is one of the benefits of having a streamlined wardrobe.  The selection of clothes are limited and I am being perfectly honest when I say that I have to do the ironing otherwise we would have nothing to wear to work next week.

By considering tasks within the home to be a closed-loop it is easier to gain satisfaction from the work you do.  It is not simply a chore of folding clothes but rather can be seen in the following way.  A hamper full of soiled clothes is washed, dried in the fresh air and sunshine (hopefully), sorted, folded and drawers and wardrobes replenished with clean clothes for the next week.  It is also an opportune time to review the state of clothes and do any repairs as required.  You can rejuvenate items before they become beyond repair.

How to you deal with washing, folding and ironing?  Do you fold clothes as they are taken off the line?

Filling the Freezer

I am putting the disaster of my photos behind me and moving on.

This week is going back to the basics of the things I do.

We have a refrigerator with a freezer section as well as a small upright freezer which is the size of a bar fridge.  It has been turned off and not used for a couple of months as I simply did not need it and it seemed pointless to be wasting electricity when I could fit everything in the other freezer.  However, I turned it back on last night as I opened a large, catering-size tin of crushed tomatoes and divided them into portions to freeze.

Frozen tomatoes

I also cooked a quantity of refried-beans in the slow-cooker.

Re-fried beans

Tonight I removed the frozen blocks of tomatoes from their containers and placed them in a double bag.  These are old bread bags that have been washed and re-used many times.

Frozen tomatoes - baggedThe containers were then re-used to freeze the refried beans.

Refried beans - ready to freeze

There was some leftover quiche which I portioned up for my lunches and 2 pieces are ready for the freezer.

Quiche to freeze

The plastic sheet to separate the slices is from cereal packaging.  I rarely buy prepacked cereal of any kind but these have been saved and rewashed many times.  I store them in a bag in the kitchen drawer when they are not in use.

The freezer is not full yet but I will be working on that over the coming days.

Freezer

Of course, there are many other things in the freezer such as meat, cooked rice, spreadable butter, grated cheese and sliced bread.

What is in your freezer?

AARGH!!

I have just come to the awful realisation that I have deleted most of the photos from my blog.

A couple of weeks ago I discovered that I could not upload any more photos as I had used all of the available space.  So, this techno-challenged fool just deleted them as they were no longer required.  However, I have now discovered that my action has also deleted them from the blog posts.  This has rendered some of the posts almost useless and many others are lacking a lot by not having the photos that were originally part of the post.

I do not know whether I will ever manage to recover and reinstate many of the photos so I apologise if you are new and looking through the archives.

I was going to do another post tonight but I am too shattered at the moment.

My apologies for the lack of posts.  I have been busy at work this week and we had an appointment on Tuesday evening to complete our tax returns. We will both receive a modest refund which will be paid into the mortgage.

We have also been looking carefully at the balance of our superannuation funds and weighing up the best options for our current income.  Pay down debt or build up superannuation?  It is a balancing act and one that you need to review regularly and give consideration to your own circumstances.

There are various calculators available online that you can use to test different scenarios.
